Senior Isaiah Pelloni started a floor hockey club for Gold Club days in the Annex gym. He hoped to find a fun time with friends and people who enjoy the sport as much as he does.
Hockey is a popular sport, ranking fourth in the United States. Pelloni discovered floor hockey after watching ice hockey and wanted to find a way for students to participate in it in school.
“There is no other way to play floor hockey in school, aside from gym class,” Pelloni said. “Also, floor hockey is my favorite thing to do. It’s one of my favorite sports, so why not start a club.”
Physical education teacher Derek Hall sponsors the club. As a gym teacher, this was the perfect opportunity for him to teach students about a sport and have fun with it.
“I think what makes it fun for the students is that they get to be with their friends and others who enjoy the activity, and it is a place where they can make new friends,” Hall said. “Most people who are in the club like to be active and competitive as well, and there is a wide range of different athletes from all the sports teams at our school.”
The main goal of floor hockey is to get the puck into the opponent’s goal. Since the rules of the sport are straightforward, floor hockey is an easy thing for students to get into and have fun with.
“It’s not a hard sport at all,” Pelloni said. “As long as you can hold a stick and hit the puck, you can play
Floor hockey is competitive like any other sport. Students can let loose in the floor hockey club and have more fun as it is not as serious as a real game.
“Getting to hang out with friends and just mess around is the best part of the club,” sophomore Colin Gibson said. “Everyone plays floor hockey like they care.”
