The Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club is collecting soda tabs to raise money. This money will go towards funding Fort Blackmore Center of Excellence student Abby Horne’s spinal and hip surgery.
“Abby has multiple disabilities and she now needs to go through some tough surgeries and they are not cheap,” Twin Springs FCCLA advisor Susan Addington said. “The cost that will come along with the surgeries will not be an easy payment for her parents.”
While Addington was the one collecting soda tabs, she didn’t come up with the idea. One of Addington’s former students works at Fort Blackmore, a school for students with special needs, and reached out to her.
“I wish I could say it was my idea, but it was not,” Addington said. “To put it in her words I would not let her or others down.”
After being contacted by Addington, FCCLA advisor Nicole Lohr decided to start a local soda tab collection. Lohr knows the value that donations can hold and figured that Louisa could help contribute to the surgery fund.
“I want to give the adviser in Twin Lakes City Public Schools as many soda tabs as possible to help Abby,” Lohr said. “I feel that anything helps, and the FCCLA adviser sending out help seemed desperate to help Abby, so it seems like Abby really needs our help.”
Addington and her students visited the school and the students. As an advisor of FCCLA, Addington understands the importance of helping others.
“The second ‘C’ in FCCLA means community. We take care of our community as best as we can,” Addington said. “We can’t always use a book to find the answer, but we can always use our heart and help others.”
FCCLA will be collecting soda tabs until September 28th, and they can be dropped off in room 135.
