UPDATED – OCTOBER 11,2024
Around 8:30 pm on October 9, 2024, Hurricane Milton made landfall as a category 3 hurricane on the Gulf side of Florida. Throughout the day on Wednesday, Milton had shifted just south of the Tampa Bay area, which was originally in the direct path. This didn’t change the destruction that was coming their way. More than 130 tornado warnings were broadcast and nearly 19 officially touched down before Milton had even made landfall. Between the hurricane force winds, flash flooding, and tornado destruction, over three million people are without power.
Many followed the evacuation procedures that were ordered throughout the state. Meteorologists advised for evacuation due to the nickname Milton had gained: “Hurricane of the Century.”
