Every year for Halloween, the school puts on a Trunk or Treat for the children of Louisa. While anyone can have a trunk, most of them are organized by school clubs.
“So far, we have about 24 clubs signed up, which is around 90% of the high school clubs,” English and Special Education teacher Sayward Labrador said.
Along with being a way for students to give back to the community, Trunk or Treat is also a way to bring the community together. With only around half of the children in Louisa living in a residential neighborhood, it’s hard for some kids to go trick-or-treating. To give these kids the opportunity to have the trick-or-treating experience, the school started hosting Trunk or Treat.
“Most of the elementary schools come, and it’s a very very good experience for the kids and for the parents,” Labrador said.
The people who host a trunk don’t only hand out candy to the kids. Volunteers from the library pass out books; people set up different games in their trunks, and they’re also trying to get an old fire truck to come out.
“We also have the STEM trailer, last year we had a hay maze inside of a really long cow trailer,” Labrador said.
One club that signs up every year is Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA.) They bring out a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) car, which teaches kids how to make slime while using their STEM skills.
“Teaching kids how to use their STEM skills is important because it teaches them critical skills and gives them experience for life,” sophomore Gianna Barron said.
The Mystery and Lore Club will be participating in Trunk or Treat for the second year. Since the club’s creation last year, they’ve tried to stay involved in activities such as this.
“We just really enjoyed doing it last year,” junior and co-president of the Mystery and Lore club Chelsea Stone said. “It gives a good way to bring all ages of the community together along with getting to know new people and getting our club out there.”
This year’s Trunk or Treat takes place in the stadium lot on Tuesday, October 29 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It was a huge success with over 3,000 people in attendance.
