According to IMDB, “Wicked Part I” is the world’s most popular movie right now. It has grossed over 385 million at the box office so far, making it the fourth highest-earning movie adapted from a musical.
This movie is an adaptation of the musical and Gregory Maguire’s novel “Wicked.” The film tells the story of two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, from the “Wizard of Oz” and how they met. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were casted as the two main roles, Elphaba and Glinda respectively.
Hearing about this movie a couple of months ago was really exciting for me since I am a big fan of Ariana Grande and I enjoy watching musicals. I had been waiting for this movie for a long time, and I finally got to watch it over Thanksgiving break with my older sister.
We watched it a couple of days after it premiered on the big screen and the entire experience was amazing. Seeing certain actors and actresses in the film showed me that they have good range and can play certain roles really well. There was a really good story and music. My favorite songs are “What is This Feeling” and “Popular.”
Throughout the movie, I had a couple of different emotions regarding what was happening. Some parts like when Elphaba started attending Shiz had me really excited for her and scenes like when the flying monkeys came out had me on the edge of my seat. Overall I had an exciting and happy experience.
I thought the casting for each role was really well done and deserved. Grande has said that she wanted this role ever since she was a little girl. Everyone played their roles incredibly, and I don’t think I would have changed anything.
“Loved seeing Wicked again… amazing production! Made me realize again how badly I want 2 play Glinda at some point in my life!,” Grande Tweeted in 2011.
One thing I will say about this was that it felt a bit longer than I had expected. I knew it would be over two hours, but it felt like we were in the theatre for a really long time. At certain parts of the movie, the directors stretched it out more than it had to be, like when they were singing “I’m Not That Girl.” Also, some of the songs like “Defying Gravity” were a bit longer than I thought.
At the end of the movie, I felt satisfied with what I had just watched, and leaving the theatre I was just as excited for part II just like I was for part I, so I can just imagine what will be in store.
