Cosmetology students took a field trip on March 13 to provide nail care and skin care services to the senior citizen members of the Second Union Baptist Church.
“I feel like a lot of people enjoy getting their nails done,” second-year cosmetology student Chole Cajigas said. ”It shows a clear difference, as opposed to a facial.”
Some of the services students provided included different types of nail care and a skincare class for senior citizens. The nail care given included many styles of manicures, including acrylics, gel, polish, and designs. Facials done by the students taught clients how to keep their skin moisturized and healthy, and included cleansing, exfoliation, and hydration. The students’ hope was for clients to leave feeling refreshed and happy.
“For my students to be able to go off campus, it just provides another opportunity for them to practice, and it helps to not always have to use a mannequin,” cosmetology teacher Tammy Brown said. “At my church, senior adults play games and do crafts, so I thought it would be nice for us to go down and provide beauty services as well.”

Taking cosmetology is not just about learning how to teach skincare and do nails, but also about learning how to interact with people, which leads to making clients. These field trips provide an extra chance for students to practice what they have learned in real scenarios, rather than just in the classroom.
“Having the opportunity to get to practice person to person is way better than just learning in the classroom,” junior Nevaeh Pritchett said. “I enjoy meeting new people and interacting with clients,” junior Nevaeh Pritchett said.

Brown is part of a local church where senior citizens who attend often have the ability to participate in activities. Brown saw an opportunity to provide beauty services to senior citizens who spend their time at the church, and soon after set up the trip.
“The community needs lots of assistance with getting services done, so this seems like a good thing to do,” cosmetology teacher Tammy Brown said.
