The Super Smash Bros. esports team is back for another season. This year, the team is looking to improve on their skills and become better as a whole.
“I like being able to see that we are improving, that we’re doing better, and that all of us as a collective are becoming a better team,” said senior Nicholas Serrett.
Matches can be determined by how well one or one’s team plays. Taking time to learn the characters and mastering each character is key to getting better at the game.
“Mostly it comes down to practicing, spending time working on various combos, various abilities,” Serrett said.
Serrett plays many different characters from Super Smash Bros, including Samus, Corrin, and Terry. Each of these characters has different play styles and move sets, for example, Terry uses his fist to hit the opponent, while Corrin uses her sword to slash the enemy.
“Character differentiation isn’t much of a thing to me,” Serret says, “I like to play a variety of characters for a variety of different reasons.”
Other members of the esports team play a variety of characters. To some, it’s because of the character’s playstyle, and others because of their own personal reasons.
“[I play] Sephiroth who was given to me by my father because he plays Super Smash Bros,” junior Jayden Jones said.

During the season, the team competes against different teams from across the region. In each match, one person from each team goes head-to-head until one comes out victorious.
“[I] like getting to go against other schools and learning about them,” sophomore Jeremy Creel said.
Before their matches, the esports team has warm-ups, where they practice combos and the characters’ move sets. The practices go from the end of the school day to 6:00 pm.
“We boot up the switch usually, and then we compete against each other, and then on Wednesdays, we will do competitions,” Creel says.
Esports isn’t just about competing; it’s also a community. The people in esports spend a lot of time on a game, working together to get better.
“Honestly, it’s about making friends. I love making friends in esports, [and] that’s what makes it really cool.” Jayden said.

Esports is a place of friendship, a family built on teamwork and quality time together.
“Primarily, I just want to have fun, and I want to play well,” Serret said.
