Addy’s guide to survive the SOL’s

The Standards of Learning (SOL) test assessments are the main part of the Virginia Assessment Program for grades 3-12. To pass an SOL you have to have a 400 or above, and anything less is classified as failing.

During the time of testing, it can be very stressful and nerve-racking. Here are a few ways to reduce the stress you may have during this time.

Make sure to get enough sleep at night. The lack of sleep may increase the levels of anxiety and can make it harder to concentrate. During sleep, your body is working to support a healthy consistent brain function and helps maintain your physical and mental health.

Make time to do your homework and study every night. You should be preparing all throughout the year or semester for this final test. If you are assigned homework every night, you’re learning the material the test will cover. That way you won’t feel overwhelmed and crammed at the last minute.

Make sure to eat a healthy and nutritious breakfast, like fruit and yogurt. When eating a good breakfast, it will improve your energy level and concentration levels throughout the day.

When taking your test, make sure to read the questions thoroughly and read all the answer choices. Use the process of elimination; check your work; and use your tools. Don’t spend too much time on over-analyzing questions, and use your time wisely. Stay positive, have confidence in yourself, and don’t second guess yourself.

Wear comfortable clothes; when wearing enjoyable clothes you may feel more home-like. You may be sitting in the classroom your testing in for two plus hours so why not wear comfy clothes.

Arrive to school on time and start to mentally prepare yourself. Make sure that you are ready for the day, so bring your chromebook fully charged, bring a book to read, and water just in case you get parched.

“Lowering expectations will never produce higher achievement,” said A very smart man (2012).

Good luck to all!
