High school can be a hard time for friendships and relationships. Teenagers are in a very emotional time of their life, and hormones are high. For me, friendships were super important, but it also didn’t come easy. Throughout my not so easy high school years, here are some ways I can help guide you through friendships and how to be a better friend.

High school is a time when friendships shape everyday life. Friends make the high school experiences more enjoyable and create unforgettable memories. Building and keeping good friendships takes effort, respect, and patience.
To begin with, don’t expect to receive what you give to other people. Being a devoting and caring person in a friendship can be great, but not receiving it back can also be hurtful. People expect to receive the same treatment they are giving, but simply, some people just aren’t capable of giving the same attention they may deserve. That being said, this isn’t a reason to throw away a friendship, just don’t expect them to give what you give. Be the “good friend,” friendships go both ways. Being a good friend means going out of your way to make the other person feel seen. Small things like checking in on someone or trying to help with a problem can make a huge difference. Make an effort, provide support, and understanding.
To continue, respect the differences your friends and you may have. In this key point of life, people develop and create their own beliefs or viewpoints. Good friendships allow room for difference. Respecting different opinions and hobbies helps true friendships develop.
Finally, balance your responsibilities and friendships. Friends are super important and a key part of life, but personal goals and morals matter too. Many things may trump your friendship to better your future; that being said, a healthy friendship will support all the ups and downs of this journey called life.

Friendships can teach very important life lessons about trust and loyalty. By being a supportive friend and choosing positive individuals to surround yourself with, you can create life long connections that last beyond high school.
For me, my friendships are valued a great deal, and I admire those who I surround myself with. Friendships can be messy. Nothing is perfect; but the ones who stick with you through the ups and downs are the ones that truly matter.
