This past Saturday, April 25, the esports team made it to the state competition. This was the first year that the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe team competed, and the first year the school had made it to the competition.
“We won the first two rounds, which were rounds 32 and 16. So we made it to the round of eight,” said special education teacher and coach Cary Varner. “We lost in the first quarter final match.”
Despite coming up short on a victory, the team stayed optimistic even after losing. After all, this is the first year an esports team competed in Mario Kart, and first time any esports team has made it to states since 2021.
“[What I like about coaching] is just getting to play video games with [students],” Varner said. “It’s Mario Kart, something I grew up playing.”
