Christmas is over; the holiday joy and fun spirits are fading. The winter blues come into play: short, cold, windy days. As we miss warm spring days (don’t worry the season is coming soon), but as we wait we will find ways to tolerate the seasonal depression.
So you may ask yourself, what can I do or how can I help myself feel more fulfilled during this winter season? Well, that’s what I am here for! Here are a few ways to help you guide through the winter blues.
To start off strong, treat yourself! Treating yourself can really help with the “winter blues”, it boosts overall mood, energy, and motivation during a season that feels so long and draining. Rewarding yourself with little treats, buying something new, or even just taking a warm bath may make this cold season feel more manageable. So slow down and take care of yourself.
To follow this, do fun activities and stay physically active. Exercise naturally releases endorphins, which is a feel good chemical that can reduce sadness, stress, and anxiety levels. This may help offset the low mood many people feel in the winter. Winter can make people less motivated and sluggish, but moving your body actually increases circulation, helping you feel more awake and overall happier.
Also, Scientists and therapists recommend being exposed to morning light for at least ten minutes. The sunlight has a strong effect on the brain, mood, and body. So open blinds, spend time outdoors, or even sit near a window. Get your vitamin D.
Continuing on, cook your favorite comfort foods. Comfort foods are often connected to positive memories, family traditions, and even feelings of safety. Cooking and eating these foods create a warmth feeling and even emotional reassurance during the cold, dark months. Cooking allows you to make choices and create something with your own capability.
Seasonal depression can make life feel overwhelming, yet underwhelming (with less fun opportunities) at the same time. These are just a few common ways to make the long months of winter a little more bearable. Follow my guide and don’t feel alone. It’s just a season of life.
