Louisa County schools will be closed on Apr. 21, 2026 because Trevilians, Jouett, Moss-Nuckols, and the Middle School will be used as polling locations for the special election.
In a typical election year, in Virginia, there would be a November general election, and if needed, a primary election in June. A primary is when voters elect the candidates for specific parties that will run in the November election. Voters must be 18 to vote in the November election, though Virginia law allows those who are 17 to vote in a primary or special election if they are 18 by the November election.

Director of Elections for Henrico County, Mark Coakley, and his staff prepare polling places, schedules election officers, provide voter registration opportunities, and programs voting equipment to conduct federal, state, and local elections. Before Election Day, it’s important to know when and where to vote whether it’s by mail, early, or on Election Day. Also, study the ballot and ask questions if unsure because being well informed can help increase voter turnout.
“Every significant change in history started with regular people deciding that their voice matters—and yours does too,” Coakley said. “By voting in any type of election, even if it is local, special, or presidential; you are choosing the kind of future you want to live in.”
Senior Maya Akram will turn 18 by the time of the April election and will be able to vote. She is currently in a government class where she is learning about how our government works and current topics of concern.
“Having us go out there and vote can change the whole election, so I think it’s just important to keep us up to date so we know what’s happening in our communities,” Akram said.
Government teacher Josh Giusto has been teaching at the high school for the past seven years and educates students on current topics in our government and the way it functions. His only students are seniors, and these students will be around the age when

they would be able to vote. Giusto ensures that these students are well-educated on the voting process, current political debates, and the governmental structure.
“Government is one of the most important topics for students because each student will always be associated with the government in some capacity for the rest of their lives,” Giusto said.
People can register to vote up until Apr. 14, 2026, and early voting begins Mar. 6, 2026 through Apr. 18, 2026. To register to vote visit the website Virginia Department of Elections or visit the local registrars office. Same day registration will be available at every polling location on Election Day, and all registration times require the voter to bring identification such as drivers license or school ID.
“This is your moment to show up, speak up, and shape what comes next. Go make your mark,” Coakley said.
