The movie, “Project Hail Mary,” arrives at theaters, today, Mar. 20, 2026. The movie is based off of the book of the same title by author Andy Weir. The movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who previously directed “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and “The LEGO Movie.”
“The film stars [Ryan] Gosling as brainy school teacher Ryland Grace, who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years away from Earth with no recollection of how he got there,” writer Jack Dunn of Variety said. “As his memory recovers, he pieces together an outlandish plot that sent him through the galaxy to stop a mysterious entity from blacking out the sun.”
The book was published in 2021 and followed the main character, Ryland Grace, and his attempt to save humanity and civilization from its probable demise.
“In “Project Hail Mary,” Ryland Grace wakes up on a spaceship with no memory, where he soon learns that he is the sole survivor on a desperate mission to save the earth.” Jenn Marie, writer for The Bibliofile wrote. “With only the two dead bodies of his crewmates as company and his memories slowly returning, he must piece together what has happened and complete his interstellar mission to save humanity.”
With many book-to-movie adaptations releasing in recent years, there has been some concern for how faithful this adaptation will be to its source material. This movie is the second of Weir’s works to be adapted to film, the last being his debut novel “The Martian.”
“‘The Martian’s’ adaptation was really true to the book. I’m thinking that if anybody wants to make a good movie, they’ll do a good job with this one,” science teacher Kimberlee Martinak, said. “I don’t really go to the movies, but I’m excited to see how they do this, particularly the alien life forces that are also included in the movie.”
