The seventh movie of the “Scream” franchise was released in theaters on Friday, Feb. 27. The new movie saw the return of Sidney Prescott, the main character of the first four films, after a two-movie hiatus.
“I really liked that they brought Neve Campbell [Sidney Prescott] back,” senior Bayleigh Michael said. “I think the whole ‘We follow one girl for a bazillion movies’ plot is kind of funny.”
Although Sidney is the main character again in the new movie, she shared the spotlight with a new character, her daughter Tatum. In the movie, Tatum is the same age Sidney was during the first Ghostface murders which creates a lot of parallels between the original 1996” Scream” and “Scream 7.”
“I kind of think they could have done [the parallels] better,” sophomore Joanha Chaves said. “They’ll probably follow Tatum if they make more movies.”

Many fan theories have been created once “Scream 7” was teased in Aug. 2023. One of the bigger theories was that the movie would see the return of one of the original Ghostface killers, Stu Macher played by Matthew Lillard. While many fans thought Stu to be dead after watching a TV fall on his head and electrocute him, “Scream” is known for its big twists.
“I wasn’t expecting [Stu] to return. When they showed him on screen, I still thought it was fake,” Chaves said.
After six movies, many fans are deeply attached to the franchise and all its characters, which puts a lot of pressure on the writers and producers. What makes or breaks a “Scream” movie is the Ghostface reveal at the end. Viewers can thoroughly enjoy the movie, but if the killer reveal goes wrong, it changes the whole perspective.
“The heart of this franchise has always been the murder mystery dynamic and trying to figure out who the killer(s) are, and then being blown away by the reveal at the end,” a fan review of the movie said. “This movie simply ruins that.”
Overall, the movie left the fans with a lot of mixed emotions. Although another movie is not yet confirmed, the ending of “Scream 7” did leave the story line open for an eighth film. This, however, does not stop fans from creating new theories and continuing old ones like Stu’s return, if another movie is announced.
“I don’t think there should have been another movie because this movie was kind of boring. I didn’t really like it,” Chaves said. “If they do make another movie, I hope they make it better than this one.”
