For over a decade, Mitski has built a reputation for music that’s deeply personal and introspective. With the release of her newest album, “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me,” fans once again found themselves in the emotional world she created.

“Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” is Mitski’s 8th studio album, and her first since her viral album “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.” In 2023, Mitski went viral on Tiktok and gained mainstream popularity with the album, which led fans to have high expectations for her new releases
“Her last album was so good,” sophomore Aibhlinn Donovan said, “So when I heard about [Nothing’s About to Happen to Me] I was excited.”
Prior to the album’s release, Mitski had alluded to the sound being different. The difference in the music was noticeable from the beginning. Her pre-release singles, like “I’ll Change for You” and “Where’s My Phone,” showcase a sound that stands apart from her earlier work.
“My immediate reaction was that there was something kind of nostalgic about it,” English teacher Katie Barnes said. “It felt personal, familiar, and relatable.”
Despite the album being different from Mitski’s previous releases, the attention and depth she puts into her songs remains the same. Mitski has always put thought and emotion into every part of her music, and listeners can tell.
“Everything in her music has some kind of purpose,” sophomore Sam Morgner said. “Her songs feel more emotional… you’re able to feel it more.”
Mitski’s attention to detail does more than make a good song, it gives readers a connection. Throughout “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me,” the songs reflect experiences that feel personal.
“She talks about things that are really relevant to what people are experiencing,” Barnes said. “There’s a feeling of longing… loneliness… almost like a coming-of-age feeling.”

Over Mitski’s career, her emotional depth has helped her develop a devoted fanbase. Fans continue to return to her music because they are looking for music that reflects complex emotions.
“[Mitski’s] music has helped me understand situations in my life,” Donovan said. “Ever since then, I’ve kept coming back to each new release.”
Mitski is popular both for her emotional exploration and how she stands out in the industry. In a world where the Billboard Top 100 is dominated by pop music, Mitski’s “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me” feels refreshing.
“There’s something kind of nostalgic about it,” Barnes said. “It reminds me of artists my mom would have played in the 90s.”
For many listeners, Mitski’s music is more than something they throw on in the background. Her songs are crafted to express difficult to explain emotions, allowing fans to see themselves in her lyrics. That deep connection is why her music

continues to impact listeners years after its release. Rather than simply listening to an album and moving on, fans often return to her songs when they recognize pieces of their own lives in them.
“The song ‘If I Leave’ really stood out to me,” Donovan said. “It just feels very representative of the current situation in my life right now.”
