On Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Civics Bee came to the High School. The Civics Bee is a national event when students get to pick an issue in their community and decide how to solve it.
The event consists of middle school students in our community including homeschooled students. Middle school civics teachers such as Anthony Swain give students a prompt and they write an essay in class. They then revise the essay before submitting it to the competition. Teachers also have students pick members of their community to reach out to, making their ideas come to life.
“We had all 20 finalists for the Regional competition come from the Middle School!” Swain wrote in an email. “The students did extremely well on the quiz section, and the top five students made the finals. In the finals, the students presented a summary of their essays. They then answered questions from the panel of judges about their essays, and the judges selected the top three. Those three finalists will go to the state competition in Williamsburg in July to represent Louisa County.”
