This year, the LCHS trunk or treat added a new trunk to its lineup: the pickleball club. The pickleball club was started when student Meika Kelley-Wagner came to 9th-grade physical education teacher Jennifer Mastro and told her how she wanted to start a pickleball club.

“I was all on board from there and glad she encouraged it to start,” Mastro said.

Pickleball club meets on Thursdays after school for an hour and a half at the tennis courts. Not only does the club give students a chance to play the game, it also gives them opportunities to build important lifeskills.

“The opportunities that the club provides are getting better at pickleball and teamwork and communication skills, because when you play with teams of two you need to communicate well,” Elizabeth Racette said.

Last week, club members decorated a trunk to look like a box of crayons and handed out candy at the Trunk or Treat.

“Preparing for the trunk or treat was both fun and stressful,” Racette said “It was fun because we made everything from scratch, but it was also stressful because we had to rush at the end of it since we were running late.”

While participants agreed that this event was a success, they wanted to build on this year’s success next year.

“Next year, I think we should prepare some things a bit beforehand as we were a bit rushed,” Kelley-Wagner said.

Mastro and the pickleball club members faced challenges when creating their trunk, one of them being the candy distribution.

“We kept running out of candy, but we kept managing to scrounge some up,” Kelley-Wagner said.

Not only did a lot of work go into the preparation and execution of their trunk, there was also work put into the clean up.

“We did our best to make sure our area was cleaner than when we arrived and helped those around us too,” Mastro said.

Overall, according to the members, participating in the Trunk or Treat was an enjoyable night for the club.

“I most enjoyed seeing everybody’s cool costumes and how other clubs decorated their cars,” Racette said “It was nice to see all of the creativity.”
